Kevin Maddrey
Kevin Maddrey has been painting for close to 10 years. Unlike many artists today who claim that they knew they wanted to be an artist ever since they were young, Maddrey had no clue as to what his future held until his 20’s. And even now things are apt to change by next season.
While in college Maddrey enrolled in two drawing classes and two painting classes, studying under Symmes Gardner. This was the springboard that led to his current life as a vagabond.
Maddrey has been living a dual life spending his summers in the mountains of California and winters on the east coast. He’s traveled extensively throughout America and around the world. Painting in countries such as Russia, Thailand, India, and the Ukraine.
The main focus throughout most of his work is on color and brush stroke. In his own words, Maddrey states:
“I find that painting is more about the process of creating and visualizing what I see. The end results are nice, but it's not the focus. This philosophy about the process, has transcended painting and has influenced all aspects of my life. When I'm painting, I'm looking at the big picture. I view my subject on so many different levels from technical aspects to the feelings that the subject produces. I feel that I view people and the world in which I live in broader terms then I did in the past. The superficial details are meaningless, the essence of the subject is what intrigues me.
His subject matter is pulled from his daily life. By looking through his catalogue of work one is able to get an understanding of the world as seen through his eyes. Often times this brings up more questions then it answers. Although the real evolution of ideas is only seen in personal sketch books and not in finished oils.
“I’ve tried painting stuff that I can’t relate to, but it ends up looking forced. It usually lacks truth and conviction. An author can only create stories based on personal experiences. In the same way, my paintings are based on stories from my life and my life is based on painting. So it's like this full circle thing that keeps me going, but takes me no where.”
Maddrey’s work is currently being shown at the Edisto Gallery in Mammoth Lakes, CA, the Tuolumne Lodge in Yosemite, CA the Tioga Pass Resort, and the Winneduhma Hotel in Independence. You can also view his work at Reeder's, Lar's, Flavin's, Jimmy's and the big yellow house in Takoma Park.
